As her son Rory turns 16, Archer anticipates his breakdown. Her fears are confirmed when she receives a call that Rory is drunk at school. His behaviors escalate and lead him to his biological mother. As Archer joins Rory on his journey toward self-knowledge, she learns that neither she nor Rory need to be victims of his dual mental health diagnosis of bipolar disorder and Asperger's syndrome.
Archer and Rory live in a small town in Maine. Rory has been a difficult child since he was adopted by Archer and her now ex-husband, Wayne. Archer's life had been hijacked by Rory's needs while Wayne chose to leave the relationship and Maine for several years. Archer has felt victimized by Rory's disabilities and blames them for her inability to date, to pursue her career and other interests. Rory acts several years younger than his chronological age. He is charming, sensitive to everyone except his mother, stubborn and literal. When he gets it in his head to meet his biological mother, nothing can stop him. He even gets on the highway from Maine to Massachusetts on a riding lawn mower going five miles per hour. When Archer decides to accompany him on his journey, it becomes her journey as well.
Wicked Good is full of rich characters with whom you will cry, hope, laugh, and cheer. Rory is a character not seen in other novels, every action and thought a contradiction. For example, he is concerned about the safety of the squirrels in his garage yet brutal in his quest toward self-identity and independence. Rory's discoveries about his birth parents and himself leaves him and Archer hopeful in their knowledge that no matter where life takes them, they will always have unconditional love for the other.

I mostly enjoyed the story, and was interested in finding out the resolution to all the loose ends. But there were some glaring discrepancies, possibly due to two authors being involved. Some chapters start out assuming the reader knows something that was not stated -- for example, Archer's relationship with Campbell. And the specific truth about how Rory's father became his father is not explained at all, just Archer's inappropriate reaction to the news. I disliked Archer at times -- for someone considering a judgeship, she showed very poor judgement, lashing out at people trying to help her, refusing to see the obvious at times, responding poorly to other characters, and sinking into self-pity as well as destructive behaviors. Her reactions caused me to put down the book several times in disgust. Also, one time line discrepancy bothered me for some reason. Rory was born in 1991, and at the time of the story was 15 years old. Yet at one point it is stated that Archer's mother is in financial difficulty because of the market downturns in 2006 and 2008. So it had to be at least 2008, making Rory 17. Not a big issue, just a sign that certain details were not checked for accuracy. All in all a good attempt at story telling, and I do admit I was involved in the outcome.Product details

Wicked Good edition by Amy Lewis Faircloth Joanne Lewis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book caught my attention because it contains the themes of Asperger's and adoption. And it is set in Bangor Maine! I felt like I was meant to read it, since I live in the Bangor area, and have a son who I adopted with Asperger's.
I really enjoyed the story line and it kept my attention from start to finish (not always an easy feat). Asperger's was presented accurately, which is a huge plus after reading several books that completely miss it (one by Jodi Picoult comes to mind). I laughed out loud when Rory was riding his lawn mower, because my own Aspie loves engines and I could picture this scene so accurately in my head. Even if I didn't have a relationship to Asperger's, I would have enjoyed the book, because it's a great story.
I gave it 4 stars, because I reserve 5 stars for only the best of the best. I would have liked the story to slow down a bit. It was very fast paced and I would have relished more detail along the way. I have my own views on how kids with Asperger's view adoption and I would have enjoyed seeing this issue explored further in the book. I also wanted Mary Beth and Wayne to have to eat more crow; I think there could have been some great satisying scenes of seeing Mary Beth realize that parenting Rory was a daunting task and Archer was to be admired for how many sacrifices she made for him.
For a few days while I was reading this book, I felt less alone in my task of parenting a special needs teenager. For that, I'm grateful.
I chose this story because I am too an adoptive mom (and lawyer) like the main character. I could relate to the difficulty of rearing a child with many challenges, topped off with the whole birthparent curiosity, and the toll it takes on marriage and other relationships, not to mention careers. Although my situation was not as extreme, it was painful for me to read this book and I had all the admiration in the world for how this mom was able to accept and nurture her son, amid shattered expectations of all kinds. I don't know how believable this saga would have been to others, but it sure struck home with me.
All Rory wanted was for everything to be "Wicked Good!"
This powerful story is about Archer Falcon, a single mom, and her special son, Rory, who has Asperger's syndrome. See what issues they must contend with in their everyday lives as mom tries to hold down her lawyer position and possibly advance, plus trying to deal with Rory and his sudden interest in finding out his roots since he is an adopted child. On a daily basis it's one situation after another that challenges them both on a personal level. Alcoholism, depression, teenage pregnancy, and abuse are just some of the subjects touched on as you travel through this story. Come on their winding journey as they figure out how to handle their lives in the best way that they know how with alot of love and support from family and friends.
This story engages you right from the very beginning. You are drawn into these character's lives and you just have to keep turning those pages in order to find out what is going to go on next. These authors did an excellent job with the dialogue and descriptions that keep the story moving at a very quick and steady pace. I've never read any stories with this type of situation as the background, but found this one to be very interesting and enjoyable at the same time.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys contemporary fiction filled with characters dealing with alot of personal issues and medical conditions.
This book was kindly provided to me by it's wonderful authors for my honest review.
Wicked Good is a page turner. The fast-pace of this book gripped me from page one.
The story begins with Rory, a kid with Asperger's Syndrome getting into trouble in school and his mother, Archer trying to protect him. I thought Wicked Good would be a tale about family, and it is, but it is so much more. When Rory decides to look for his biological mother, Archer must fight to protect her son at the same time as let him follow this search through. Rory's quest, with the help of another troubled teen takes him to Bangor, Maine where Rory gets wrapped up in the history of the perfect storm, the Andrea Gail, and the Salem witch trials.
The short, snappy chapters are so well-written that you cannot help but keep reading chapter after chapter to the end.
This is a fabulous read for anyone, but especially if you have or know of a child with Aspergers Syndrome.
I could not put it down.
